Toby Ng - The World of 100
Have you ever asked yourself, what would the World look like as a small community of 100 people? Probably not. However, it is something to think about, as the reality would be startling - as much as you’d think so, the village would only have 7 computers, and only 1 person in the World Village would be educated at University level.
These facts are something that designer Toby Ng has thought about very carefully, and turned the results of his findings into a series of twenty infographics depicting ‘The World of 100’. Although aesthetically beautiful, with sharp lines and bold, vibrant colours, these infographics are often horrifying.
The posters look as though they have come straight out of a children’s book; is this to mirror the naivety of those that are most likely to be looking at them on their computers?

It’s the little things that make doctors great.
When I was on my OB/GYN rotation 3rd year, I had a post partum patient who was in the ICU. She went nuts on some people, went in to early labor, and then went into a coma. No one really knew what was wrong with her. She had been tested for and had ruled out nearly everything, and her doctors were still stumped.
She had very little family and no one ever came to visit her. As a result of her frequent fevers, developing C/S wound infection, and profuse sweating, she smelled pretty sour. Her hair hadn’t been washed or combed in quite some time. Her smell plus her contact precautions status made it so that people only went in her room if they absolutely had to.

The pre-med track is not welcoming and fuzzy, at least in my experience. When I first decided to pursue it, in the middle of my sophomore year, it was very intimidating. Furthermore, I didn’t really know any pre-meds or anyone in med school, so I had nowhere to go for advice except the internet….

“According to a recent study headed by scientists from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the University of Granada, eating commercial baked goods (fairy cakes, croissants, doughnuts, etc.) and fast food (hamburgers, hotdogs and pizza) is linked to depression.
Published in the Public Health Nutrition journal, the results reveal that consumers of fast food, compared to those who eat little or none, are 51% more likely to develop depression.
Furthermore, a dose-response relationship was observed. In other words this means that “the more fast food you consume, the greater the risk of depression,” explains Almudena Sánchez-Villegas, lead author of the study, to SINC.
The study demonstrates that those participants who eat the most fast food and commercial baked goods are more likely to be single, less active and have poor dietary habits, which include eating less fruit, nuts, fish, vegetables and olive oil. Smoking and working more than 45 hours per week are other prevalent characteristics of this group.”
My first job was working at McDonald’s when I was 16. Then I read Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser. Those two combined essentially ruined fast food for me forever. After reading this, I’m not too bummed out about it.
Using glass and neon, Jessica Lloyd-Jones has created a series of sculptures inspired by biological electricity, the prescence of natural electrical activity in the human body.
About Anatomical Neon:
Blown glass human organs encapsulate inert gases displaying different colours under the influence of an electric current. The human anatomy is a complex, biological system in which energy plays a vital role. Brain Wave conveys neurological processing activity as a kinetic and sensory, physical phenomena through its display of moving electric plasma. Optic Nerve shows a similar effect, more akin to the blood vessels of the eye and with a front ‘lens’ magnifiying the movement and the intensity of light. Heart is a representation of the human heart illuminated by still red neon gas. Electric Lungs is a more technically intricate structure with xenon gas spreading through its passage ways, communicating our human unawareness of the trace gases we inhale in our breathable atmosphere.
